About

What are the ONB Labs?

The ONB Labs are a platform to foster and inspire research, experimentation and creative work with the Austrian National Library's digital collections and data. We select and present openly licensed collections, tools to support working with them and sketches to illustrate use cases. The ONB Labs are a flexible service of the Austrian National Library that are continuously revised and expanded.

How did the ONB Labs come into being?

The Austrian National Library defined its contribution to the knowledge economy in its vision paper 2035. This paper included that the ONB will digitise its collections, facilitate the access to cultural heritage and support research. These ambitious guidelines are explicated in the strategy paper 2017-2021, grouping this vision in executable goals. Among these are establishing a library lab and providing linked open data. The ONB Labs have since then been developed and improved in continuous exchange with the International GLAM Labs comunity.
