About

What are the ONB Labs?

ONB Labs is the Austrian National Library’s platform for digital collections as data. Here, you can access the collections including metadata for research, experimentation and creative processing. On our homepage you will find project reports, information on current events and calls, as well as further information on our work. Under the heading Data Sets you will find selected digital collections of the ONB, including images, full texts and/or metadata. You will also find access to the catalog, catalog data as Linked Open Data and an interface to the ONB’s web archive data. A selection of tools can be found in the section of the same name. Scripts and interactive Jupyter Notebooks for processing our data can be found with the corresponding documentation in our GitLab. If you need support for your project, please contact us. The ONB Labs are a dynamic service offered by the Austrian National Library, which is constantly being expanded and modified according to the requirements of the community.

How did the ONB Labs come into being?

In its Vision 2025, the Austrian National Library has defined where it sees its place in the modern knowledge society. The defined values and fields of action include, for example, the digitization of collections, easier access to knowledge and support for research. The ambitious guidelines of Vision 2025 were gradually translated into concrete goals and measures in the 2017–2021 strategic plan, among other things. This resulted in the ONB Labs and the Linked Open Data strategy, among other projects. These make an important contribution to the realization of Vision 2035, for example by enabling new access to the diverse collections and new opportunities for research.

The website went online on November 22, 2018 and was presented in a small circle (see the topic on the ONB Labs launch). Since then, the offer has been available to everyone and several events (ONB Labs Symposium 2019, 2021, 2024) have been held. Since then, the entire ONB Labs offering has been continuously developed and improved in close cooperation with the International GLAM Labs Community, individual researchers and in project contexts.
