Background đź“š

The NewsEye project was funded by the European Horizon 2020 funding program and a cooperation between several European universities (La Rochelle, Helsinki, Innsbruck, Rostock, Paul-Valéry Montpellier, Vienna) and National Libraries (Austrian National Library, Finnish National Library, French National Library). The aim was to develop tools and methods during the project period from May 2018 to January 2022 that would improve access to historical newspapers (1850–1950) for researchers, library users and the interested public and thus change the way European digital cultural heritage is researched, used and analyzed. The heterogeneity and enormous size of the data set produced, with more than 15 million pages, was a major challenge. However, the project team was able to develop several tools that made it possible to achieve the key objective, such as automatic tools for text recognition, newspaper structure analysis and multilingual content processing. The “NewsEye Platform” tool was implemented in the ONB Labs under the title “Annolyzer”. This allows four newspapers from the Austrian National Library’s holdings and the data extracted from them (article segmentation, text contained, recognized proper names) to be searched dynamically. More information about the project can be found here, the “Annolyzer” can be found here. Have fun exploring!
