ONB Labs Jupyter Notebooks Workshop
Retrospective on the ONB Labs Jupyter Notebooks Workshop 2026
On March 26, 2026, the Austrian National Library’s Centre of Information and Media Literacy hosted a hands-on Jupyter Notebooks workshop organized by ONB Labs. The aim of the event was to provide both beginners and advanced users with low-threshold access to computer-assisted analysis of data from the Austrian National Library and ÖNB Labs, and to demonstrate how to work with Jupyter Notebooks through practical examples.

After an introduction to the concept of data analysis and how Jupyter Notebooks work, the participants were able to get hands-on: In several sessions, they worked with various Jupyter Notebooks developed by Sonja Dorfbauer from the current project “Data Analysis in the ÖNB Labs”—ranging from catalog data and ANNO metadata to the Austrian Web Archive, historical aerial photographs, and the Ariadne database “Women in Motion.”

Participants were able to work collaboratively on laptops in small groups, ask questions, and test out their own ideas for analysis. The ONB Labs team guided them through the process, helped with technical challenges, and provided insights into the many ways to analyze library data using Python, geocoding, or visualizations.

The workshop demonstrated that Jupyter Notebooks are highly versatile—suitable for data collection, preparation, analysis, and visualization—and that they can enhance research, teaching, and library workflows.
